FORT CHARITON, Our Adventure…

The Fort for short…….In spring of 2015, Grizz and I took a detour from our past business experiences to become partners in building a place where WE would want to go for a new and unique dining experience. The restaurant and the campground located on a gravel road near Yarrow, MO, on the banks of the Chariton River, became our project that would take a year and a half to open. The building, itself, needed complete renovation due to neglect and past flooding. After several auctions, road trips for equipment, and lots of man (and woman) hours, we have opened our restaurant, bar, and campground. We hope our adventure will become a destination spot you will enjoy visiting.

To reduce the risk of future flood damage, we put a wall around the premises, thus the name “The Fort.” We re-purposed barn wood, flooring, doors, windows, and tin roofing to create a one of a kind atmosphere. We added new bathrooms and an “ice room.” The “Smoke Haus” was built to accommodate our smoking friends with a service bar all of its own. We also made the building wheelchair friendly.

In the campground, a new 50 and 30 amp service for each hookup was installed; water lines and sewer lines were improved. Tons of new rock, leveling and grass seeding have added comfort and beauty to the 20 spaces. (There is an open area for those who want to tent camp.)

We offer a menu of appetizers, salads, sandwiches, and desserts to start; adding a full dinner menu of steak, seafood, and pasta in August as we expand our staff. We currently offer a well-stocked bar, beer on tap, bagged ice, and packaged liquor to go. There are also a variety of non-alcoholic beverages and food choices to please the children and grandchildren.

We look forward to serving the community, friends, and family. We thank all of those who have shared in our adventure and pitched in not only with “blood, sweat, and tears,” but with building materials, décor items, ideas, and moral support! We would also like to thank those who have “stayed thirsty” waiting for us to “get’r done.” It’s been a journey!

We invite you to take a scenic drive to the country, take part in the adventure, and enjoy our hospitality.

See you at Fort Chariton, “a chain of one!”
